MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS

Breezeblocks
This music video is a combination of a narrative, including a story of two characters, and a performance. The piece reveals the narrative although is edited to appear backwards, this effect allows for a slightly confusing nature to the video whilst still clearly revealing the story.
The location for this video is shot entirely in one area, presumably the flat of the two characters, using different rooms to change scene (bathroom, kitchen, living room etc). The use of the one location is a simple technique that still gives the narrative of the song an effective setting .
The costumes of each character again were kept simple throughout this piece, using only one costume for each, the dark clothing throughout reflects the dark nature of the narrative and doesn't stand out too much against the scenery.
The challenges in shooting this video may be that it would be difficult to keep the characters (and narrative therefore) clear in such a dark setting, this can be manipulated however both with the use of on set lighting and or during the editing process.
The planning/logistical challenges of this shoot may have been it would be difficult to know how the entire video would look running backwards, and therefore the initial idea may not have worked out as planned.
The challenges of editing this video may have been the shots running backwards may not have looked as planned, or would need switching around. Another editing challenge ay have been, as mentioned before, the lighting of the piece.
To an extent this is a conventional music video, most music videos contain the story that the song was trying to display. The video also falls into the conventional category of some sort of love interest/breakup narrative.

Elephant Gun
This music video is a performance piece, with clips of the band and also other dancers/performers around them. This doesn't clearly reveal a narrative although it could be argued there is a story here.
There were two locations used for this video, a large hall and a beach, create two juxtaposing scenes. The crwoded nature of the hall due to the amount of poeple and decorations is clearly juxtaposed by the one band member standing on an empty seafront. This creates an atmosphere of slight confusion and each location adds to the other.
There are many costumes throughout the video, not only the costumes of the main band memeber/ singer but also the costumes of each character surrounding him. The dancers/ performers all have varying costumes with some similarity creating chaos but keeping unity between each person in order for the aesthetic of the piece to remain pleasing.
The challenges in shooting this video may have been the chaotic nature of the performance making it difficult to know exactly what the outcome would look like, each character would have had to be specifically placed, without this the chaos would not have seemed so coordinated and the piece would appear messy.
The planning/logistical challneges of this shoot may have been coordinating each shot specifically, in order to keep the narrative together and to not allow for the piece to become disorganised. Another planning issue may have been the putting the initial idea onto a storyboard, it is difficult to predict how, for example, dancers or performers will look in relation to the setting/costumes/music.
The challenges of the editing may have been the continuity of the piece, there are lots of different props and decorations ,e.g the confetti, that if were out of place would have made the video seem unprofessional.
This is a conventional music video in the sense that the singer is present on screen and there is a large performance of mainly dancers, however the use of the different/unusual locations make the video appear unconventional too.

Is This Sound Okay?
This video has a strong narrative throughout, following two characters and appearing through montage footage.
There are a few locations used for this video, including a flat, coffee shop, bar and various outdoor shots to clearly reveal the story of the piece. The video also has extra footage of the two characters separately, on the piano and a scene using a projector. Each location has a distict style, with various colours and lighting making the shots unique. The locations were also each used more than once some with the same aesthetic e.g the stairway and some different e.g the flat, to highlight the narrative of the piece.
There are a few costume changes for each character throughout the video that vary depending on the scenery, e.g the casual wear at the coffee shop and slightly more formal wear at the bar.
The challneges of this shoot may have been revealing the narrative clearly whilst keeping the distict feel to the video. Another challenge faced whilst shooting may have been the use of many different locations, keeping continuity is difficult when switching locations and the ability to control outside locations is fairly difficult. The lighting for each shot is very specific for example the yellow light in the flat or the more blue light on the stairway, this may have been difficult to maintain. (However thinking about this the lighting was probably priduced in editing)
The logistical/planning challenges faced with this piece may have been planning each shot, keeping the props/locations fitting with eachother and in turn creating shots that are balanced.
Some challenges that may have been faced during the editing and post production of this video may have been the use of the older camera, possibly making it difficult to edit smoothly and easily. Another challenge may have been the switching and cutting of shots to fit the music, it may have been difficult to do this accurately. Some shots are equal to others, for example the deck chairs, there is one shot of the two characters sitting together and later a shot of just one, it may have been difficult to edit so the shots match perfectly.
This video is fairly conventional as it again holds a strong narrative, although due to the odd aesthetic of the shots and locations it could also be seen as unconventional.
